There is no Being, just the Deed

For those of us with a creeping sense of being cast on the wheel of fortune, our colleague A.W. Strouse offers a welcome tonic in Gender Trouble Couplets: Volume 1. Inspired by the once-maligned form of medieval versified encyclopedias, Gender Trouble Couplets renders the first chapter of Butler’s now-foundational analysis with formal rigor and crisp wit. If  verse encyclopedias bore “witness [to] the reluctance with which prose was accepted,” Strouse demonstrates how a return to the sensual experience of verse can help us appreciate Butler’s precise philosophical prose in a new way.
